How to Build an Underground Bunker

If you’re concerned about protecting yourself and your family from danger, there are a number of ways that you can create a  super cool and updated underground bunker to do just that. We’ll look at a few of the most popular ways to get started on how to build an underground bunker and to make sure that you have everything you need in case of an emergency.

Of course, the first thing that you can do is actually to dig out tunnels and even rooms underground. Some people choose to start with their basement and build a shelter outward from there; however, this can be quite extensive, time-consuming, and difficult to do. That’s why other options are available to make things simpler for you.

Shipping Containers

Shipping containers are becoming a popular building material in several ways. For one, they can be used for tiny houses, but if you put them into the ground, they can make an excellent shelter. These containers are, by nature, durable, long-lasting, and secure. All you need to do is dig out a hole at least 2 feet deeper than the shipping container is tall. You also want it to be wide enough and long enough to accommodate the container and a set of stairs to get you down to it.

You’ll need to add vents and pipes to help provide utilities or at least continuous airflow through the container so you can use it for an extended period of time. You may also want to add corrugated steel, I-beams, and concrete over the top of the entire thing to make sure it’s even better protected. Adding anything inside the shipping container for storage, sleeping, and more is going to be entirely up to you.

Tube Containers

These tubes are typically used for reinforcements underground but can be large enough for your family to live in for a period of time as well. They’re made with galvanized, corrugated pipe and need a frame to create a stable and level floor (since they’re round by nature). You may also want to add other structures to the inside for things like storage and sleeping.

As far as the exterior of this container, you’ll need a hole that’s large enough all around for the container. You then want to make sure you have a ladder or stairs built that will get you down into the structure. Be sure to add in any additional fixtures, utilities, plumbing, and such that you may need in order to stay comfortably in the shelter for as long as possible.

If you’re looking at building an underground bunker, you should take a close look at the different options. These are only three of the ways to learn how to build an underground bunker. Each one can be adjusted and customized to create a better fit for you. Make sure you look into what your family actually needs or would need if there were an emergency. Then, build a shelter that will fulfill all of those needs.

  1. Shipping Container’s need to have reinforcement on the sides, and the ceiling. It is a very weak built system. The
only strength is vertical on the corners. They were built to be stacked on top of each other.
