Food and Water 101

Water Stockpiling and water filtration

It goes without saying that access to water is key in any survival situation. The ultimate aim is to be self-sufficient by having a water collection system or water filtration system if you have access to a water source. As a backup, you should always store safe, clean water that will last you a few months to a year if there is a water crisis, so learning how to properly stockpile water is important to make sure you always have access to it in case of an extended emergency, or if you’re having to shelter from danger.

Food Storage and Stockpiling

Knowing which foods to stockpile will be essential for your ability to survive an emergency and will be your second most important consideration after securing your water supply. You need to have as varied a diet as possible while balancing that with the need for the food to have a long shelf life. As such it’s important to have a clear idea of what types of foods are appropriate for each type of survival situation and how much you need depending on how long you, and how many mouths you need to feed. Properly storing these foods will be key to their longevity and so investing in the right storage methods and equipment is hugely important.

Growing food and hunting

As part of a long-term survival strategy, being able to create your own food source is a great aim. This makes it much easier to be self-sustainable, less reliant on stockpiled food that is at risk of perishing or being stolen. However, you will require skills for both growing and hunting and in the case of growing, enough fertile land to make it worthwhile. Knowledge and equipment are key here, but mastering these two skills means you will be much more self-reliant and much better equipped to survive long-term. It also acts as an insurance policy for your stockpiled food should something happen to it, or you simply run out.
