How Do People Know What Tips to Use?
Since we are going to be vetting the tips we receive on survival shows, we need a process to do so. This will change as you get more experience, but the law of large numbers will help at first. This states that the larger your sample group is, the more accurate the information will be.
There are a few different ways to build up your sample group. The more shows you watch, books you read, and articles you view online, the better your decisions will be. If you see one person suggest replacing their boot laces with 550 paracord, you really don’t know if it is a good idea. If you watch more shows and three other experts suggest it, you probably have good information.
If you are like me and want to know immediately if the suggestion is good, do your research. I like to do online searches on any new survival tip. I read articles specifically discussing the topic, and view forums where dozens of survivalists comment on the idea. I have also built up my own network of survivalists, so it is easy to hop online and ask people I trust.
The last suggestion I can make is to test out the idea in a safe environment. I would never head into the wilderness on a survival challenge and just assume some tip I heard on TV would work. Before I trust that information, I test it out. If I want to know if paracord for boot laces is smart, I can simply replace my laces and walk around for a few days. On this particular tip I found that the extra cordage is nice, but that paracord is slippery and needs to be double knotted.
In Conclusion
The beautiful part about TV these days is that we have more survival information available than anyone dreamed of 20 years ago. If you really dig, there are dozens of off-grid and survival TV shows that you can find still airing or online.
As long as you watch with a grain of salt, you can learn a great deal. As stated before, question everything. Remember the law of large numbers and vet your information. Build a network and ask people you trust. You will be a better survivalist because of it.
